A magical place! Welcome to Lanzarote

Picturesque villages and lively tourist centres in the midst of a breathtaking landscape of volcanoes, lava fields and barren mountains, on which the sunlight conjures up the most beautiful colours. Discover Lanzarote, an island with a difference.

The easternmost of the Canary Islands is only around 140 kilometres west of the Moroccan coast and around 1000 kilometres from the Spanish mainland. With an area of 845 km², which extends over a length of approx. 60 km and a width of approx. 20 km and is home to around 160,000 people, Lanzarote is the fourth largest island in the archipelago. Lanzarote was the first island to be declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve in its entirety.

Three quarters of the island is covered in lava, spewed out of at least 300 craters from around 100 volcanoes. The eruptive material from the almost six-year-long eruptions from 1 September 1730 to 16 April 1736 covers around 20 percent (167 km²) of Lanzarote.

The development of Lanzarote took place in a sustainable manner and in harmony with nature. We owe the greatest contribution to this to the artist César Manrique, who harmonised his unique art with the conditions of the island and its nature.
